Scoliosis

Causes and Symptoms

Scoliosis is an abnormality of the spine when the spine is rotated and curved sideways. When the cause of scoliosis is unknown, it is diagnosed as idiopathic scoliosis which runs in families. The three types of idiopathic scoliosis are infantile (babies to 3 year olds), juvenile (4 to 9 year olds) and adolescent (10 to 18 year olds).

There are four common types of scoliosis curves:

  • Right thoracic curve
  • Right thoracolumbar curve
  • Right lumbar curve
  • Double major curve

Some common symptoms in moderate to severe scoliosis cases include:

  • Changes with walking
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Trouble breathing
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Pain in the form of spasms and inflammation in the strained back muscles

Chiropractic treatment can help diminish, delay or stop degeneration in the spine.

Chiropractic care alone cannot cure your scoliosis but it is a helpful tool in diagnosing if you do have scoliosis. The spinal adjustments that chiropractors will perform can alleviate some of the pain and pressure that is sometimes felt by the abnormality.
