Neck Pain

Causes and Symptoms

Vertebrae make up your neck and extend from the bottom of the skull to the upper part of your torso. Abnormalities, inflammation or injury in the cervical discs, bones, ligaments and muscles of your neck can cause pain or stiffness. This can be due to poor posture or overuse but in certain cases pain can be from a fall, contact sports or whiplash. Neck pain does not usually last long but severe pain that lasts longer than a week can indicated a serious injury or illness.

Some causes of neck pain include:

  • Heart attack
  • Meningitis
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Muscle tension and strain
    • poor posture
    • jerking the neck during exercise
    • working at a desk for too long
  • Injury
    • car accidents
    • falls
    • sports

Chiropractors can help with neck pain and bring you back to normal.

Initially, chiropractors will perform physical and neurological exams to determine the cause of the pain. Posture, range of motion and physical condition will be observed in the physical exams. Tests may need to be ordered in order to help diagnose the condition. These may include an x-ray, CAT scan or MRI. Treatment plans will be determined based on individual needs. Some of the treatments that may be explored include:

  • Neck adjustments (cervical manipulation)
  • mobilization
  • massage
  • rehabilitative exercises
